About Chihuahua Beginnings
For most people the Chihuahua is just a cute and recognisable breed of dog. Not many people or owners know about the breed’s origins and rich history. Unfortunately this is because there is a lot of speculation amongst experts about the details of the Chihuahua’s rise to fame.
The Chihuahua is native to the country of Mexico and is even named after one of its states. It is believed that the breed originated from the ancient Toltec civilisation that existed in the same region.
The Toltec people were the first to domesticate the ‘Techichi’ – a small, mute, long-haired dog from which experts believe the Chihuahau is descended. Archaeological evidence like graves and writings has shown that, similarly to cats in ancient Egypt, the Chihuahua’s ancestors were believed to be sacred.
The techichi dogs of the Toltecs were believed to have powers over death and could serve as a guide through the afterlife. In addition they were even believed to protect you from evil spirit! For this reason they were the prized companions of the rich and upper-class in Toltec society. Unfortunately for the Techichi the lower classes could not afford to be superstitious and often ended up dining on them.
Whatever the truth regarding its ancestry the Chihuahua’s home today is Mexico and it is often synonymous with the country and culture. The American Kennel Club first recognised the breed in 1904.
Since then the Chihuahua has come a long way and has risen to fame as the favoured pet of Hollywood stars. Recently it has also become fashionable to dress up your Chihuahua – something made popular by socialites like Paris Hilton and films like Legally Blonde. The most famous Chihuahua is perhaps Paris Hilton’s Tinkerbell who is often seen accompanying her – the both of them decked out in the latest fashion trends and priciest labels. Canine fashion has become a lucrative business with high-end labels like Gucci cashing in.
The Chihuahuas of today are a far cry from their ancient ancestors but if their history has proved anything it’s that these dogs are a beloved companion of humans.
