The first rule of dog Club is you don’t talk about Dog Club! Actually that’s not true – people who are members of their local dog club love talking about how much fun they have with their pooches.
Chihuahuas aren’t known for being the most social or active dogs. In fact, your little dog probably prefers napping on the sofa to just about anything else. Your local dog club probably offers some incentives to get you and your pup out and about and you both just might learn a thing or two while you’re there.
What is a Chihuahua Dog Club about?
Many communities have a local dog club that offers training classes, socialization, and support for dog owners just like you. Some of the classes that dog clubs offer might be:
• Puppy preschool
• Basic obedience
• Good manners
• Advanced obedience
• Freestyle dancing
Along with a variety of classes, most dog clubs also provide a network of other experienced dog lovers and professional dog trainers that can help support and advise you when you have questions about your Chihuahua.
Why you should join
Not only is being a part of a dog club a lot of fun, it can be a very rewarding experience for both you and your Chihuahua.
Socialization! We’ve all known those nasty little dogs who have a fit any time a new person or new dog come within 30 yards. These aren’t “bad dogs” these little pups are just unsocialized. If you want to avoid such rotten behavior with your wee dog, than a joining a dog club is a great way to help her learn how to behave around new people in new situations with other dogs. Remember, a well socialized Chi is a happy, secure Chi! You will also get a chance to socialize with folks just as dog-crazy as you are, maybe make new friends, and swap stories of your furbabies’ antics.
Bonding time! Spending time in classes and at dog-friendly events sponsored by the dog club are a great way to deepen the bond between you and your Chihuahua. Your pup will learn to look to you for guidance during scary situations and learn to trust you even more. As a dog owner you will learn to communicate more effectively with your pooch through new and fun activities and you will learn to understand her behavior and personality even more.
Learning! Let’s face it, Chihuahuas aren’t known for being the easiest dogs to train. By participating in a variety of dog club classes, your pup will learn to learn – she will come to understand that learning new things and making an effort to do what you ask of her is fun and rewarding. The more she learns the more she will be able to learn and before you know it you could have the smartest, most well behaved Chi in town! By participating you will also learn new things yourself. You will learn how to communicate what you want from your pup and how to get it. You and your Chihuahua will be able to take what you learn at dog club and apply it to other situations to continue the fun at home.
Avoid unwanted behavior! A busy dog is a happy dog is a well behaved dog. Your Chihuahua will have so much fun at dog club that she won’t have time to be naughty at home. The other dog owners and trainers at dog club can also help you redirect your Chihuahua’s unwanted behavior (such as constant barking or nipping) into productive behaviors making your baby-dog that much more of a joy to live with.
