Whether your Chihuahua is short or long haired, you need to know how to groom them so their beautiful Chihuahua coat will look nice and clean. This will also help you to check the presence of ticks and if they have any sign of skin infections.
Taking care of your Chihuahua is not a big issue as long as you follow a routine. Following are some tips on proper Chihuahua grooming.
- Chihuahua Grooming – Bathing your chihuahua. It is recommended that you bathe your chihuahua monthly; however, if you think they need washing before hand, then do so. Put a rubber mat on the tiles to prevent the both of your from slipping. Use tepid water and a dog shampoo. Begin washing around the neck then towards their back moving on to the head. Make sure that their eyes do not get any soap in them. Put a cotton ball in each ear to avoid water from getting into his ears. Rinse your Chihuahua friend thoroughly making sure that all shampoo has been washed to avoid itching and skin dryness.
- Chihuahua Grooming – Brushing their hair. Use a brush with soft bristles when brushing your Chihuahuas hair. Although shorthaired Chihuahuas need infrequent brushing, it will be wise to do it weekly to check for the presence of ticks and make sure they’re in good health. If you have a longhaired Chihuahua try to brush once or twice in a week. Use a soft bristle brush first followed by a standard steel comb to remove tangles and maintain its shine. Remember to brush their long hair before and after every bath to best avoid tangles.

While brushing their hair, look for any infected skin or fleas. Use a flea or tick remover to remove these pests, which can be bought from a pet store or from your veterinarian. You can also use a good pair of tweezers.
- Chihuahua Grooming – Examine your chihuahua’s eyes and ears. Any stinking smell means that wax has built up. Moist a cotton ball with an ear cleaning solution, which can also be bought from pet shops or your Vet, and clean the inner side of your Chihuahua’s ears as well as the outer area of his ear canal. Ensure that the cotton ball is not too wet. Remove any discharge from his eyes by using a soft damp cloth. Cleaning your Chihuahua’s ears is almost the same as cleaning your own ears.
- Chihuahua Grooming – Trim their nails. Your pet’s nail must be regularly clipped, as they grow fast. Cut thier nails gradually ensuring that you do not hit the blood vessels that run along his nails. The vein will bleed once you cut it that will make your pup to cry. In some cases this can be very serious. I find this less necessary with my Chihuahua who wears down his nails running on pavement, but do make sure to keep an eye on the length of their nails regardless.
By observing proper chihuahua grooming practices, your chihuahua will maintain the smooth soft texture of their hair. Likewise, you will be able to avoid skin infection as well as ticks and other parasites. Probably most importantly I find is that you can hug your chihuahua as much as you want without fear of excessive hair on your clothes or the smell of an unwashed dog. Besides, having a pet does not stop at feeding them it should also involve ensuring that they always look their best.
